2021 Adult Summer Reading

GETTING STARTED WITH BEANSTACK:

  • For your desktop, visit the Library's Beanstack URL: gmplibrary.beanstack.org. For your mobile device, download the Beanstack app from your app store and search for Grafton-Midview Public Library. 
  • Select "Register an Individual or Family" and follow the prompts to create your account.
  • The homepage will show you the available reading programs. Choose the one that is right for you. For adults, choose the Adult Summer Reading & Recreation Challenge 2021.

2021 ADULT SUMMER READING & RECREATION CHALLENGE:

Read or listen to a book, or complete an activity to earn tickets toward one of eight themed prizes. The more you do, the better your chance of winning. Finish the program by acquiring all 60 tickets.

In addition to reading 40 books, participants can also complete the following 20 activities:

  • Use a public computer at the Library to log into Ancestry to discover new information about your family history.
  • Submit a reference question via the Ask a Librarian tool.
  • Attend an outdoor or virtual program at the Library.
  • Check out a desserts cookbook and bake one of the recipes.
  • Log into CreativeBug and explore their craft classes. 
  • Find a relative or friend in the Midview yearbooks in our Local History Room. 
  • Enjoy the outdoors by going for a hike. 
  • Get a relative or friend to sign up for a Library card. 
  • Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.
  • Watch a movie that is longer than 120 minutes. 
  • Listen to an entire album from beginning to end.
  • Read a printed newspaper or magazine. 
  • Discover a new author to read on NoveList. 
  • Read a short story.
  • Contribute to the Grafton-Midview Community Cookbook.
  • Share your COVID-19 experience with us. 
  • Check out a travel book of a place you would like to visit someday.
  • Watch an entire television series.
  • Simply come into the Library and say hi to a staff member.
  • Write a poem.

PROGRAMS:

We're offering a wide variety of virtual and in-person programming this summer! All programs require registration unless otherwise noted. Registration for summer programs begins on Monday, May 3. To register for programs, please visit our Events Calendar here. The health and safety of our patrons and staff is our top priority. Masks and social-distancing are required for all in-person programs. 

 

Living in the Digital World Senior Expo

Thursday, May 27, 9:00 am via Zoom

During this time of continued "physical distancing but never social distancing," the nonprofit Center for Aging in the Digital World invites seniors to relax with a cup of coffee or tea and spend the morning in the comfort of their homes, discovering why and how to embrace "Digital Literacy" and learning how to stay safer online. This year, GMPL is a proud partner of these live educational presentations on the important life-skill of the 21st century. Tales from the Chisholm Halle Costume Wing

Monday, June 6, 6:00 pm via Zoom 

Patricia Edmonson, Museum Advisory Council Curator of Costumes & Textiles at the Western Reserve Historical Society, will highlight her most recent exhibit curated from the incredible Chisholm Halle Costume Wing. Program includes a 30 minute lecture and a 30 minute virtual tour. 

 

Tales of the Torso Murderer

Thursday, June 17, 6:30 pm via Zoom

Decades ago, the Torso Murderer terrorized Cleveland by killing at least twelve people, eluding legendary lawman Eliot Ness, and disappearing without a trace. Michael Jordan will discuss the crimes and how the murders inspired his novel, The Company of Demons

 

Nature Hike with the Metro Parks: What's Happening in Nature? 

Friday, June 25, 10:00 am at Indian Hollow Reservation 

Take a naturalist-led walk on the diverse Sheldon Woods Trail to explore first-hand the variety of habitats and animal homes found in Lorain County. 

 

Exploring Watercolor

Thursday, July 15, 5:00 pm at Willow Park

Learn the basics of watercolor with instructor Kathy Hyle. In the first hour, practice various techniques and in the second hour, put those new skills to work by painting a beautiful scene. 

 

Nature Hike with the Metro Parks: Birds and Birdwatching

Friday, July 23, 10:00 am at Indian Hollow Reservation

Take a naturalist-led walk on the diverse Sheldon Woods Trail to explore first-hand the variety of habitats and animal homes found in Lorain County. The Metro Parks will provide binoculars to participants. 

 

Nature Hike with the Metro Parks: The Nature of the Quarries 

Friday, August 27, 10:00 am at Indian Hollow Reservation

Take a naturalist-led walk on the diverse Sheldon Woods Trail to explore first-hand the variety of habitats and animal homes found in Lorain County. Please keep in mind that the Windfall Quarry Trail is on uneven ground.
